Rated 5 out of 5 by from From -7c.. to damp +7c I just trust them. P.S. I treat them gently over +15c.. there they start to get soft.. I am on my second set and use it the whole year. I live in -5 - +17c climate. The first set was 225/40-18 FR and 255/35-18 rear, sold the wheels and tires after 28k km (plenty left) and went for 4x 255/35 - 19" to cover the RC-F brakes. In my case 35-45k km is about max and that is fine by me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Traction & Extremely Quiet I had these tires installed on my 2015 Audi S5 (18” factory wheels) for the South Jersey “Late-Fall to Early-Spring” period where we do not normally see much over 6” on any given snowfall. Over the last several seasons these tire have been tremendous! They are quiet, handle superbly with Audi’s 4wheel drive, offer great traction and stopping — in short, I could not ask for a better winter tire in our type of fall-to-spring driving conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Winter handling Fitted on a 2016 BMW X3. The Alpin winter tires handle snow, slush, wet roads and cold well enough to keep you confident on the road in adverse weather conditions. Ice handling is mediocre at best but this tire isn't designed for that. Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome tires.!!! I own a 2017 Grand Sport Corvette and I put these on the rear and the backend is glued to the ground.!! The compound of the tire is very soft therefore in 0 degree temps these still get great traction.. I'm putting them on the front for this winter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Renewed Michigan Winter Driving Confidence!!! After debating with myself to buy winter tires, im glad I did. I pick up trash for a living and the job requires me to be there 2 hours past midnite. Unfortunately, when I get up hardly any roads are plowed and after getting stuck in the base of my driveway countless times, these tires were my saving grace. Alittle pricey, but completely worth it. Im able to cut through my hilly neighborhood with ease, especially under wet, heavy conditions. What I noticed is that they have only gotten better since I put them on a month ago. Peace of mind and being able to get to my job with ease is all I could ever ask for, and these tires provide that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow. Great Tire Just purchased a new '14 Audi S5. Did not realize that the stock tires were high performance summers and was faced with a decision to either go with All-Seasons -or Winter's- and just swap out. After extensive research I settled on this tire - and paid a premium - since they are very hard to find. Online retailers said in November that they couldn't get them to Jan!! Makes no sense so I had to buy it at a premium from dealer. All I can say is WOW- glad I did- because these tires represent an amazing feat of engineering. They are just as quiet as my summers with little to no degradation in tire performance. That just doesn't seem possible with a winter tire. I live in the NorthEast- so have put these through a NorEaster along with snow- and has ripped through everything with gusto. Maybe it's the combination of these tires and Audi's quattro system but the car just feels anchored to the road even in the worst weather. Could not be happier with this product and would recommend to any owner especially my fellow Audi enthusiasts.

A year ago, my brother borrowed my car and on the way back from his short trip snow started and he skid off the road (very minor repair to safety plastic under the engine). That moment was a wake-up call for me. I'm usually using the same car to ride my family around and definitely didn't want the same to happen to me or any of my family members. I'm from the country where summer gets 40 to 45deg Celsius but winter gets some snow and average temperature around 0 deg C. I've been planning to get another Michelin Winter tire, but this one was on stock, no need to wait. Immediately I felt the difference, even when there was no snow, as advertised when the temperature of the ground gets below +7 deg C. those tires were magnificent. Wheels do exactly what you want. After a snow fall I felt that my ABS is not working crazy, like it was before with All Season Tires, meaning the wheels not losing traction easily. Then me and my friend decided to do some experiment, he has the similar car (per weight) but All Season tires. We found abandoned road with icy snow on it and start testing for braking distance, all test were repeated at list 3 times. First test was to perform Emergency stop from 40km/h to 0km/h, Vehicle fitted with All Season tires skid for 30 meters (98.4 ft) longer repeatedly. Second test was to apply emergency stop from 60km/h to 0km/h, Vehicle fitted with All Season tires skid for 50 meters (164 ft) longer. This wasn't a test to convince my friend but to check if there is real world/life difference in All Season vs Winter tires, but my friend went directly to the shop to buy a set of winter tires. Definitely recommend the winter tires from Michelin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from +1 for these with the S4 I'm heading through my second winter on these. On packed snow, I've found them to be truly great. They stop and turn very well. My neighborhood is hilly and doesn't get plowed. Traveling uphill through 6 to 8 inches of snow, there's definitely some wheel slip - but they've always gotten me through the hills and onto plowed roads. Descending steep hills is a non-issue. No sliding at all. A good match for the S4 - they make the pretty much bullet-proof in winter.

Speed Rating:

The speed rating is a measure of what speed the tire can safely maintain for sustained periods of time. A higher speed rating will generally indicate that you will have better control and handling characteristics. Speed rating standards are established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Manufacturers assign speed ratings to tires after extensive performance testing. On the sidewall of every tire, you’ll find one of these speed rating codes:

M – Up to 81 mph
N – Up to 87 mph
P – Up to 93 mph
Q – Up to 99 mph
R – Up to 106 mph
S – Up to 112 mph
T – Up to 118 mph
H – Up to 130 mph
V – Up to 149 mph
W – Up to 168 mph
Y – Up to 186 mph
Z – (See Below)

What does ‘Up to 99 mph’ really mean?
Tires with a Q speed rating can safely sustain speeds of up to 99 miles per hour. The tire may be able to reach higher speeds, but traveling at speeds higher than 99 mph for any length of time would be unsafe - the tire is not designed to handle it.

What is a Z Rating?
For tires having a maximum speed capability above 149 mph, a Z rating may appear in the size designation ...above 186 mph, a Z rating must appear in the size designation, including a Y speed symbol in brackets.

A Few Tips About Speed Ratings…
Never mix tires with different speed ratings, as this may cause serious handling problems.

We don’t recommend downgrading the speed rating of your tires, as the vehicle manufacturer has done extensive testing to determine which tires match the various driving characteristics of the vehicle. However, if you are looking for better handling, there is generally no problem in moving up to a higher speed-rated tire.

Most importantly: Put safety first. The speeds shown are test speeds; they are not recommended speeds.

Temperature Rating:

A comparative grade based on the tire’s resistance to heat and its ability to dissipate heat, again as measured under controlled conditions. The grades, from highest to lowest, are designated A – B – C. An A-rated tire is the coolest running, while a C-rating meets the minimum federal performance standards. These temperature grades are set based on a tire that is properly inflated and not overloaded.

Traction Grade:

A comparative grade based on the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement, again as measured under controlled conditions on wet asphalt and concrete surfaces. The grades, from highest to lowest, are designated AA – A – B – C. A tire that is graded AA should have better traction or stopping performance than a tire with a lower grade, based on the specific straight-ahead braking tests.

Treadwear Grade:

A comparative grade based on the actual wear of the tire’s tread when tested under specific controlled conditions. All tires are tested under the same conditions to allow for comparison between manufacturers and between different lines of tires from the same manufacturer. The system is fairly easy to understand. A tire with a treadwear grade of 400 should have a useful tread life approximately twice as long as a tire with a treadwear grade of 200. The higher the grade, the better the expected treadwear.

The Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) system was developed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to assist consumers in the purchase of their tires by providing a standard grading system used by all tire manufacturers. Remember: The UTQG isn’t a safety rating and it doesn’t guarantee a tire’s mileage performance - but you can use the UTQG in conjunction with price, warranty, appearance and recommendations to make the right tire choice for your needs. Hauling groceries – or bricks? The Load Rating or Load Index indicates how much weight each tire can safely support.

Every tire’s load rating is stamped into its sidewall. Once you know the load rating, you can use the chart below to determine the amount of weight that one tire can support. Then just multiply the weight by four - or the number of wheels on your vehicle - to determine your vehicle’s maximum load-carrying capacity.

Load Rating Table

Sometimes the maximum load (for example, 1060 kg) will be stamped into the sidewall so that you don't have to decipher the load rating. Remember: never install tires with a lower load-carrying capacity than the tires that were installed on your vehicle by the manufacturer!

Load Range:

The load rating is a measure of the tire's strength — its ability to hold air pressure under load.

The load rating influences the sidewall strength of a vehicle tire. If a tire has a load rating that is too low, the handling of the vehicle could become unstable as the sidewall buckles under the vehicle's weight. Conversely, a much higher load rating than needed can dramatically harshen ride quality.

The recommended load rating for a vehicle's tires can be found in its owner's manual. It is also normally affixed to a sticker located on one of the vehicle's door jams. If you are replacing tires supplied with the vehicle from the manufacturer, the load rating written on the tires is an appropriate guide.

Sidewall:

There are other codes on some tires that provide you with additional information, some of which are specific to light truck tire applications. Some of the other codes that you might find on your tires include:

LT = Stands for light truck application. Example: LT235/85R16
C, D or E = Load range indication for light truck applications
REIN = Reinforced
OWL = Outlined White Letters
RWL = Raised White Letters
ORWL = Outlined Raised White Letters
B, BLK, BW, BSW = Blackwall or Black Sidewall
W, WW, WSE – Whitewall or White Sidewall
XNW = Extra Narrow White Width
XL = Extra Load Capacity

Section Width:

The linear distance between the outside sidewalls of an inflated tire without any load (exclusive of protruding side ribs and decorations).

Sidewall Aspect Ratio:

The ratio between tire height and width.

The first number describes width of the tire (section), the second number describes the aspect ratio (profile), and the third number the wheel diameter (rim size).
